各国政府应该害怕他们的人!

There is a battle going on in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou over local Chinese Communist Party attempts to censor a newspaper called Southern Weekend. There have been demonstrations in support of the paper and its striking reporters, and, predictably, counter-demonstrations by Party hacks.

It is most relevant that some of the pro-free speech demonstrators have adopted, as their symbol, V's sign from "V for Vendetta."

The New York Times is providing intensive coverage of this unfolding story: [link]

Not total victory, but a compromise settlement that would have been unthinkable only a few years ago seems to be in the offing: [link]

Apparently, the leadership has become concerned that further crack-downs are inflaming the free speech movement across China, something they really don't want. Recall that all of this started when the newspaper, Southern Weekend, planned to run an editorial calling on the central government to live up to its promise of constitutional government, which was then repressed.

It is really interesting that somehow the Chinese censorship machine screwed up and permitted one of the state-run TV networks (CCTV-6) to broadcast "V for Vendetta" across China during the week before Christmas. See: [link]
