The image depicted here originally appeared on the cover of the December 29, 1917 issue of Leslie's Magazine, a British publication, and is quite possibly the first example of a propaganda remix, in this case, done by the original artist himself, the immortal James Montgomery Flagg. The original caption on the piece read "Get Off That Throne," which presumptively was directed at Kaiser Wilhelm, not at the British Crown. ;)

I am going to research the snot out of this one, because I am thoroughly intrigued with the fact that Flagg, knowing that his "I Want You" Uncle Sam was destined to be an icon (it already was at the end of 1917), would deliberately parody his own stuff. What a great sense of humor and total lack of self-importance. The laugh always comes first! Here's to you, James Montgomery Flagg!
