This poaster has been created by request for the SeaofSorrow group here on DA. I encourage you to support their efforts to stop the annual slaughter of hundreds of dolphins at Taiji Cove in Japan.

I have totally revised the content and title of this piece. The original racist depiction of a Japanese soldier has been dispensed with.

Wow they are doing this again this year, and even worse (this time it is over 500 dolphins).

Remember guys this poster was from the 1940s. It was intended to be racist to promote xenophobia nation wide. This is actually one of the tamest posters depicting Japanese from that era. Most have them pictured as sub-human rat people raping white women or stabbing defenseless people and ganging up on wounded soldiers. This artist specializes in re-purposing WW2 propaganda posters and was asked to do this piece. He picked the tamest he could find and I've tried to help him to find something more appropriate but it may not be out there and this was a requested picture.

Well my friend it means..That the fishermen..Round up many Dolphins in the cove..They take the females who look like flipper so that they can make a quick buck from 50,00 to 150,00 for one female dolphin..To whoever wants a Dolphin and has the money..Then they kill the rest and eat them...the problem is the Dolphin has such high Mercury in them that they are poisoning themselves..It just sad all around..Their is not reason for the wiping out of a Dolphin that is like Flipper no reason at all..this why I'm fighting and getting the word it..It because of greed and because they are like Flipper..Thats where it all started..And a country saw a cash cow..:(

Good cause, but unfortunately short-sighted, for what is conveyed. These posters had little to do with an actual message of reason for war effort, other than xenophobia. I look at this, and I don't see anything about the Taiji Cove being conveyed. Just "hate it because *they* do it".

Let me know when you're ready to do something. You'll need a higher resolution version than the one posted here for print reproduction as T-shirts, etc.

If you plan to use these as T-shirts you might want to wait a minute to see if maybe he can do something better with picture I linked him. While I agree with your cause the fact is pretty much everything relating to anti-Japanese propaganda is extremely racist and full of all sorts of violence and bigotry. As tame as this poster in comparison I believe it will only hurt your group if you try to use it publicly. I can see if I can find anything else that might be able to be used to help though.

I know that you specialize in shops of WWII posters, but it REALLY isn't a good idea to do that with something relating to the Japanese. Maybe you could've just taken a public domain, CC, or royalty-free japanese whale-hunting picture and done something with that.

This just comes off as racist.

Yeah, like I said, I'm prepared to be justifiably accused of hypocrisy on this one and to take the heat for it. The illustration is clearly racist. However, among the genre of American World War II anti-Japanese propaganda posters, this one is pretty tame: usually, the Japanese are also depicted raping women or shooting unarmed prisoners in addition to being characterized as subhuman rat-like creatures, as in this poster.

The under-socialized part of me thinks, however, that if the Japanese want me to stop posting stuff like this, then they can stop the killing of hundreds of sentient cetaceans for sale as cheap lunch food for Japanese school kids.

But it's not the fact that someone is Japanese that makes them inherently kill whales, nothing in the DNA that creates that, just like there's no biological basis for black men raping white women or Jews being greedy or Latinos being lazy.

Of course not. It's cultural, and even then, it is not exclusively Japanese. The Norwegians, Icelanders, French, and others do it, too.

That said, I'm not fighting by Marquis de Queensbury rules here. As Alinsky said, "In a fight, if you happen to inadvertently land a blow ABOVE the belt, you stop and apologize."

So, I'll stop for a minute now and say, "I apologize."

I support the effort but there probably was a better poster choice than this WW2 one. Grant most of the early propaganda posters were full of bigotry in one form or another making it hard to pick a decent poster that's still relevant to the situation.

I encourage you to find one and I'll use it. They're all like this, or worse. I considered this, and came to the conclusion that the bloodthirsty depiction presented here is appropriate to the situation which the poaster is designed to protest. In that light, I'm willing to take the heat from those who don't care for the original illustration.
