Police Captain Ray Lewis -- OWS Participant by poasterchild Police Captain Ray Lewis -- OWS Participant by poasterchild

Captain Ray Lewis is a retired member of the City of Philadelphia Police Department who engaged in a heroic act of civil disobedience, leading to his arrest, at an OWS action on November 17, 2011, in New York City. His words (quoted in the poster) stand as a testament to his integrity and as a challenge to all of those still sitting on the fence. As Captain Lewis also said during the action that led to his arrest, this to the NYPD officers on the scene, "don't be Wall Street mercenaries."

I would be honored to share the back of a paddy-wagon with this man, any time, any where.

Well, normally I distrust the police a lot. But this man is brave and honorable. "Don't be Wallstreet mercenaries!" Oh, yes. That sholud teach a lesson to the uniformed drones of the system.

I'd be honored to share the back of a paddy wagon with Ray Lewis any day.

And, if the "mercenaries" appeal makes even one cop think about the broader implications of what he is doing, then Captain Lewis has landed a powerful blow for equality before the law. It has to start somewhere. Don't you agree?

He deserves the medal on his chest there, no matter what he got it for.

We need more like him. Cops, firefighter, priests, doctors, nurses. . .people who can wear an identifiable "uniform" to these demos and occupations. No fake costumes, but if you're a hardhat, come dressed for work. And read Alinsky. All three books.

The man has my respect, and it's a shame that the only reason other police would not join this man with the protesters is that they are afraid to lose their jobs if they showed any opposition to the orders of their corrupt, bought-out higher-ups.

Well, a lot of them don't have a clear class consciousness and confuse their interests. But, over time, if we keep raising the issue, some will see the light, and that is important.
