democracy these days is bullshit and idiots and selfish morons are those in power. but we don't have ANY men or women in there who would not be. it is not about what kind of ism you have in your country. democracy, communism, fascism.. it's always the same who leads the country.

yet I still vote democracy over all. because I believe there will be change coming. in communism or fascism. this kind of change is impossible.

I totally disagree with your post. There is a huge difference between democratic and totalitarian systems. Moreover, the entire post-World War II era demonstrates that democracy is on the rise, while the totalitarian systems of both the right and left are in decline. Soviet Union? Gone. The military dictatorship in Myanmar (Burma)? Going. The dictatorship in the Philippines? Gone.

The problem, if it is a problem, is that the people have to do it themselves. No one gives up power without a fight. The task is to use non-violent means of resistance an change to force out the totalitarians, and, in the democracies, to force the leaders to live up to democratic principles of making government work for the broad mass of the people, not the privileged few.

While I agree in full with the sentiment, as a historian I must make this correction; this quote does not come from Jefferson. The quote is a conflation of an excerpt from a letter written by Jefferson to William Branch Giles and notes made on that letter in a 1994 book by Noam Chomsky.

I edited the appropriate section of Jefferson's letter to Giles for length, and paraphrased some of it. I am quite sure I was faithful to Jefferson's meaning and intent. Thanks.
